Essential Skills Support

As a student at Yale you can receive support from the Essential Skills Team to develop the Basic Skills of Literacy and Numeracy and the Key Skills of Application of Number, Communication and ICT, together with the Wider Skills in Improving Own Learning and Performance, Working with Others and Problem Solving. You can have help on how to complete assignments, write essays, use a reference system and learn tips on study skills. These skills will help you succeed on your chosen course.
If you are interviewed prior to enrolment you will undergo assessments in Literacy and Numeracy before your interview. If you are not interviewed prior to enrolment you will undergo the assessments at enrolment or shortly after the beginning of term. These assessments will allow us to give you the best advice about your learning needs and you will be given guidance on courses that are appropriate to your level of skills. If your assessment results show that you are working below level one in literacy and/or numeracy compulsory support sessions will be included on your timetable, where appropriate. If you are working at or above level one, but wish to enrol on a course which requires higher levels of literacy and/or numeracy you will be given advice on the various ways you can improve your skills.
Many students find that they need to improve in some of the skill areas outlined above, especially if they are doing Key Skills or have been out of education for a while.
The Essential Skills Team runs skills workshops which you can attend either individually or as part of a group. These support sessions are run by Skills Tutors on both the Grove Park and Bersham Road sites. Distance learning and self-access alternatives such as e-mail, Moodle, and postal support are also available if you prefer to work independently.
