The Knowledge Transfer Partnership at Yale College
Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP) are created between innovative businesses, college’s and graduates across the UK.
For businesses, Knowledge Transfer Partnerships mean:
- Implementing new technologies
- Developing new products and markets
- Financial support for innovation
- Having a skilled graduate work on a strategic project
- Access to university consultancy and facilities
For graduates, Knowledge Transfer Partnerships mean:
- Career development
- Implementing strategic projects in a real business situation
- Responsibility
- The opportunity to develop a portfolio of technical and business skills
Yale College’s Transfer Partnership Centre supports the development of businesses across North Wales and our website provides information for businesses and graduates who are interested in KTP.
What are Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP)?
Knowledge Transfer Partnerships are about:
- Applying academic knowledge for the direct, tangible benefit of business.
- Providing businesses with access to talented graduates, academic expertise and Government funding.
- Involving a graduate working on a project identified as central to the company's future commercial development.
- Employing one or more graduates or KTP associates and can last for between 12 and 24 months.
The work of the KTP associate is jointly supervised by the business and academic staff.
Up to 60% of the costs of each Knowledge Transfer Partnership, including the KTP associate's salary and the academic's time are covered by a Government grant.
Knowledge Transfer Partnerships benefit all three partners by:
- Delivering tangible benefits to the business e.g.: new products and improved processes
- Preparing graduates for management positions in industry
- Enhancing the teaching and research capability of participating academics.
Knowledge Transfer Partnerships for business
Knowledge Transfer Partnerships enable businesses to realise plans and projects beyond their existing financial and human resources by providing them with access to:
- Academic knowledge and facilities
- Funding
- Skilled graduates
Knowledge Transfer Partnerships are business led and deliver results which meet the needs of businesses which take part.
Knowledge Transfer Partnerships can produce:
- New product lines and markets
- Highly skilled employees
- Reductions in costs and lead times
Businesses which participate in Knowledge Transfer Partnerships frequently go on to develop long term partnerships with the College. Many of the companies we work with also benefit from the other services that the College offers.
Knowledge Transfer Partnerships for Graduates
Becoming a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) associate enables high flying graduates to combine many of the benefits of post-graduate study with full time employment in industry.
Typically, Knowledge Transfer Partnerships last two years and offer an opportunity to develop a portfolio of personal, business and management skills and a head start to a career in industry.
The Associate will:
- Combine practical and formal training - 10% of the time will be devoted to enhancing non technical skills
- Receive academic supervision throughout the programme
- Follow a tailored programme of business related development
Persons with a good first degree (typically a 2:1 or better) and/or a higher degree could be eligible to take part in a Knowledge Transfer Partnership. Vacancies are available across a wide range of industry sectors.
