Yale College students experience Emergency Services

27/04/2010

Yale College public service students gained “real life” experience of how Emergency Services deal with chaos this week when a simulated road traffic accident situation took place during their training.

Taking part in the “set up” collision, students Connor Speed and Adam Smith acted as the driver and passenger of the car involved. Complete with make-up done by Louise Fitzgerald the activity provided a very dramatic account of the work involved and pressure placed upon life-saving personnel.

Attending services clearly highlighted to Yale students, in this fantastic “play-scene”, the intensity of a real RTA as fire-fighters cut the roof off the car to get the occupants out and the ambulance team provided medical support. The police work involved a careful analysis of the situation to maximise safety, they cordoned off the area and breathalysed the driver who was then “arrested” for being over the legal alcohol limit.

To help the learners understand the implications of drinking too much, they had to wear ‘beer goggles’ and kick a plastic bottle over then pick it up just to show the impact alcohol actually has on your body. The students also had chance to have a close look at the equipment provided inside police, fire and ambulance vehicles and talk to all the teams including dog handlers and traffic police,

“The students get a vivid glimpse of active service,” said Vanessa Griffiths, public services lecturer at Yale College, herself a former police officer, “gaining this experience is a huge benefit to their studies and career planning.”
