INTRODUCTION
The Horse Owner’s Certificates are awarded by the British Horse Society.
These courses are offered at four levels of knowledge with regard to the care and management of the horse specifically aimed at the first time horse owner or parents of horse owners.
Yale College is a centre for these courses, although delivery will take place at approved centres throughout Wales, where equipment and horses are available. We can also offer the course at Yale in an evening.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
No previous experience is required only enthusiasm and dedication.
COURSE CONTENT
Level 1:
- Knowledge of horse types, uses, colours and markings.
- Elementary stable management.
- Knowledge of care and maintenance required to keep a horse healthy and comfortable in the stable.
- Stable routine and safety in the stable. Safe handling of both the horse and equipment necessary for his well being. A knowledge of substances in common use which require particular care and/or storage.
- Identification of items of tack in common use and naming of the parts. Basic care of tack. Ability to take to pieces, inspect for safety, clean and re-assemble.
- Reasons and principles of grooming. Knowledge of the items in a grooming kit and their use.
- Basic knowledge of shoeing and care of the foot.
- Recognition of signs of health and ill health and when to call the vet. Temperature, pulse and respiration rates.
- Preventative treatments – worming, flu-vac etc. A basic knowledge of the need to worm and vaccinate.
- Elementary principles of watering and feeding. Rules of feeding and watering.
- A knowledge of buying a horse. Points to look for. The need for a vet to assess the horse before purchase.
- Elementary rules for preparing a horse for a ride, riding out on the roads, returning from a ride and riding dress.
Levels 2, 3 and 4 require a progressively greater depth of knowledge in horse care and management.
ASSESSMENT
Assessment is by written examination paper.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
These courses are aimed specifically at the first time horse owner and therefore would offer proof of experience should the student wish to progress to further training or entry level within the industry.
ADDITIONAL COSTS
These courses are theory based study and riding is not part of the syllabus.
One examination and certification fee is provided at no extra cost. Course Fees
Full-time students do not pay course or examination entry fees, except in some cases when there are examination re-sits. Part-time students pay course fees, which are displayed in College publications or are obtainable from Admissions, and examination entry and / or registration fees.
